Canada: Government extends emergency powers

Toronto, February 22 (News Hunt)- Canadian lawmakers voted on Monday night to extend the emergency powers that police can invoke to quell any potential restart of blockades by those opposed to Covid-19 restrictions.

Lawmakers in the House of Commons voted 185 to 151 to affirm the powers. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said earlier that the powers were still needed despite police ending the occupation of the nation’s capital by truckers over the weekend and police ending border blockades before that. Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair said the protesters were going for the “lifeblood of this nation, which is trade with the United States”.

Punjab sees three Covid deaths, 125 fresh cases

Chandigarh, February 22 (News Hunt)- Three more people died from COVID-19 in Punjab while 125 fresh cases took the state’s infection tally to 7,57,475, according to a medical bulletin issued on Tuesday. Deaths were reported from Jalandhar, Pathankot and Patiala, taking the death toll to 17,689. The number of active cases was 1,120.

Low intensity earthquake of magnitude 4.3 hits Ladakh

New Delhi 22 february (News Hunt)- The National Center for Seismology (NSC) on Tuesday (February 22, 2022) morning informed that a low-intensity earthquake of magnitude 4.3 hit Ladakh. An earthquake occurred around 8:35 am at a depth of 10 km.

“Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.3, Occurred on 22-02-2022, 08:35:26 IST, Lat: 35.74 & Long: 75.32, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 151km NNW of Kargil, Laddakh, India,” the NSC said in a tweet.

Air India plane carrying 240 passengers from Ukraine to land at Delhi airport at night

New Delhi, February 22 (News Hunt)- An Air India plane carrying more than 240 passengers from Ukraine is expected to land in the national capital after 10 pm on Tuesday, according to officials.

The airline is operating a Boeing 787 aircraft to bring back Indians amid rising tensions between Ukraine and Russia. The flight AI 1946 is on the way to the national capital and there are more than 240 passengers onboard. It took off from Boryspil International Airport in Kyiv at around 6 pm, the officials said.

Flight tracking websites showed that the flight is expected to land at the Indira Gandhi International Airport after 10 pm. Earlier, Air India flight AI 1947 took off from the national capital at around 7.30 am and landed at Boryspil International Airport at around 3 pm IST (Indian Standard Time).

According to a civil aviation ministry official, some other Indian operators are also expected to operate flights to Ukraine depending on the demand. In recent weeks, tensions have been escalating between Ukraine and Russia, and on Monday, Russia recognised the independence of two separatist regions in the eastern Ukraine. On Tuesday, Indian embassy in Kyiv again asked Indian students to temporarily leave the country amid the rising tensions. Air India, on February 19, announced that it would operate three flights between India and Ukraine on February 22, 24 and 26.

Meanwhile, full-service carrier Vistara’s CEO Vinod Kannan on Tuesday said Vistara has no plans at this time to operate flights to Ukraine. “At this time, we are not planning flights to Ukraine because of aircraft limitations and other reasons,” he told PTI.

On February 17, the civil aviation ministry asked Indian carriers to look at the possibility of operating flights to Ukraine due to the increase in demand.

Over 2 million people in Punjab consume alcohol: PGI survey

Chandigarh, February 21 (News Hunt)- More than three million people, mainly men, in Punjab are consuming one or the other kind of drug. Alcohol is the maximally abused substance by more than two million, followed by tobacco consumed by more than 1.5 million people, a study by the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here said on Monday.

The abuse of opioids is by 1.7 lakh individuals, followed by cannabinoids as well as sedative-inhalant stimulants. The latter are largely a class of pharmacological or prescription drugs being used illicitly. There are also a large number of injecting drug users in Punjab with high prevalence of HIV (19.5 per cent), said the recent survey. It was published in the second edition of ‘Roadmap for Prevention and Control of Substance Abuse in Punjab’.

As per the State of Punjab Household Survey (SPHS) and statewide NCD STEPs Survey by the PGIMER, the projected number of overall substance use in Punjab is 15.4 per cent.

The book is in simple form, easily understood by the technical and the layman.

“The book has incorporated a few interesting case studies from different parts of Punjab. It has advocated introduction of life skills education in the school and college curriculums. It also emphasises peer group approach in educational institutions which is an effective way to motivate adolescents and young adults. Since the focus is on prevention, the life-cycle approach actually caters to individuals of every age group,” said Thakur.

FOOLPROOF SECURITY FOR EVMs AND VVPAT MACHINES STORED AT STRONG ROOM- DC GHANSHYAM THORI

Jalandhar, February 22 (News Hunt)- Expressing satisfaction over the security arrangements at strong rooms made for storing EVM machines, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said that the district administration has ensured foolproof security arrangements for the safety of the EVMs and VVPAT machines stored here at the office of Director Land Records Government Arts & Sports College and Maritorious School for the counting of votes for all nine assembly segments scheduled to take place on March 10, 2022.

While visiting the strong rooms, the DC said that the machines were stored here in the presence of representatives of political parties and Election Observer, thereafter proper sealing of strong rooms were ensured by the administration.

Mr. Thori said that strong room would be now opened on March 10, in the presence of the candidates and observers for counting of votes.

The deputy commissioner said that the multi-tier security arrangements have been made for the security of the EVMs and VVPAT machines in the strong room. He said that while the outer cover has been provided by the personnel of Punjab Police and Punjab Armed Police, the inner cover for security was being provided by the CAPF.

Likewise, the Deputy Commissioner said that CCTV cameras have also been installed at the venue of counting centre for Surveillance of voting machines. Mr. Thori said that the LED Screens have been installed here for the candidates and representatives of political parties to check the safety of EVMs any time. Meanwhile, he directed the ROs to ensure waterproof renting at this place earmarked for the representatives of Political Parties so that they dont face any problem here. The DC reiterated free, fair and transparent elections in the district as elaborate security arrangements have been made for counting.

48 FLOOD PROTECTION WORKS WORTH RS. 21.63 CRORE TO BE COMPLETED IN JALANDHAR- DC GHANSHYAM THORI

JALANDHAR, FEBRUARY 22 (NEWS HUNT)- Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori today said that flood protection works worth Rs. 21.63 crore would be carried out in the district as a part of district administration’s advanced measures to tackle any kind of flood-like situation during monsoon season.

Participating in a virtual review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary Anirudh Tiwari, the DC said that a mammoth exercise was already undertaken to further strengthen flood prone areas along the river Satluj besides cleansing the drainage system of the district. He said that a whopping amount of Rs. 21.63 crore would be spent on this task wherein as many as 48 flood protection works to be accomplished before the onset of monsoon.

Pointing out further, the DC said a total of 21 works worth Rs. 11 crore in Phillaur sub division, followed by 16 works costing Rs. 6.77 crore in Shahkot, four works worth Rs. 2.35 crore in Nakodar and seven works at Rs.1.51 crore in Jalandhar-I & II sub division.

Meanwhile, Mr. Thori directed the officials present in the meeting to complete these ongoing projects well in time so that the administration was ready to tackle any kind of flood-like situation during monsoon, especially during heavy inflow of water into river Satluj. He also mentioned that he would personally monitor ongoing works and strict action would be taken in case, where negligence was found in this task, if any. On the occasion ADC (G) Amarjit Singh Bains, District Revenue Officer G.S. Benipal and others were present.

24 fresh Covid cases in Jalandhar district

Jalandhar, February 21 (News Hunt)- As many as 24 new cases of COVID-19 were reported from Jalandhar on Monday. With this, the total tally reached 78,096 cases. As many as 76,400 people have recovered from the deadly virus, while the number of active cases reached 122. With one more deaths reported in Jalandhar, the tally stands at 1,574. Of the 20,63,484 samples collected in the district, so far, 19,01,097 samples have tested negative.

No board exams this session for Class V, VIII: Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar

Rohtak, February 21 (News Hunt)- The Haryana Government has decided not to conduct board exams of Class V and VIII for all government and private schools in the state in the current academic session.

The development has brought major relief to over 2,000 private schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which had been fighting a legal battle against the government’s move of conducting the board exams. They have termed the development as their victory.

“We had decided to hold board exams for Class V and Class VIII for all schools in the state, but some people said the Covid situation had badly affected studies this year. So, board exams should not be conducted. Keeping this in view, no board exams for Class V and VIII will be held in the current session. The schools will be able to hold the exams for both classes like the previous session,” said Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister.
